OBITUARY. MR. JOHN CLEMENTS. Another of our old and highly esteemed neighbors has passed away from earth in the person of Mr. John Clements. He was born in the North of Ireland on the 22nd of June, 1798, and died at his residence near Milton on the 21st of February 1873, in the seventy-fifth year of his age. In August, 1823, he came to this country, and about forty-two years ago he and his wife settled on their present farm, where they have resided ever since. It stands to the credit of Mr. Clements that with his own hands he chopped down the first tree on his place, and he was one of a noble race of men - the pioneers of our county - who are rapidly disappearing. By a course of honest industry and the blessing of God on his efforts he succeeded in securing not only the necessaries but the comforts of life. His long residence in this section of country secured for him a large circle of acquaintances, and with increased acquaintance there has been continued and increasing respect. As a neighbour he was kind and obliging; as a husband and father he had affection and firmness combined; and as a business man he was strict and honorable, carefully avoiding to take advantage of any one and giving no one an opportunity to take advantage of him. For a length of time his extreme feebleness has prevented him from leaving home and much of his time has been spent in reading and meditation; and while exceedingly fond of reading good books on various subjects, the Bible was his favorite book and from it he derived much encouragement and strength when otherwise feeble and suffering. His funeral took place on Sunday afternoon the 23rd inst. A very large concourse of relatives and friends assembled at the house at 1 o'clock and proceeded to the New Connexion Church, where an appropriate sermon was preached by the Rev. Mr. Brown, founded on Genesis 25th chapter, 8th verse:"Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people," the Rev. Mr. Orr of Trafalgar assisting in the service; thence to the cemetry where his remains were quietly deposited in the kindred dust. Mr. Clements leaves behind him an aged widow, nine children, twenty-one grandchildren and a wide circle of acquaintances. May the family be sustained by Him who has promised to be the "husband of the widow and the father of the fatherless."- COM.
